    Paul Wayland Bartlett was born into a family of artists in New Haven, Connecticut.

    His father, Truman H. Bartlett, was an art critic and sculptor who played a formative role in his son's artistic education. At the tender age of 15, Paul began his formal training in Paris under the tutelage of Emmanuel Frémiet, renowned for his animal sculptures.
